A Review of the 2024 Strategic Advisory Board Meeting at Helmholtz Information
In early May of this year, the annual meeting of the Strategic Advisory Board of Helmholtz Information took place. The Strategic Advisory Board, a panel of independent international experts, plays a central role in the scientific and strategic advising of Helmholtz Information. This year, the event, which attracted more than 70 participants over two days, was hosted by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
Experiencing Research Diversity: The Campus Tour at KIT
A key component of the meeting was the comprehensive exploration of the KIT campus. Participants had the opportunity to gain insights into the information-based research focuses at KIT during an extensive campus tour. At various stations, the diversity of ongoing research activities was highlighted. The presentations and tours covered topics such as digital future technologies, biological systems, and automated material research. Participants gained insights into advanced laboratory facilities and current projects, showcasing interdisciplinary research efforts and the use of artificial intelligence.

Setting the Course for the Future: Strategic Discussions
Following the tour, intensive strategic discussions took place under the theme “Navigating Past, Present & Future.” The board reflected on the progress of the current Program-Oriented Funding period (PoF-IV) and provided recommendations for the remaining duration. Additionally, initial steps for the strategic direction for the next funding period (PoF-V) were discussed. These discussions were characterized by valuable insights and recommendations aimed at further optimizing the research strategies of Helmholtz Information.
Focus on Science: Mini-Symposium on Artificial Intelligence
The event concluded with a mini-symposium on “Artificial Intelligence – Methodologies, Applications, and Trends in Different Fields.” Early-career scientists presented their research, demonstrating the range and relevance of artificial intelligence in various disciplines. The presentations covered topics such as smart electronics for the human body, explainable machine learning in materials science, alternative methods for spectrum analysis in quantum chemistry, and the use of large language models in materials research.
Successful Exchange and Outlook
The Strategic Advisory Board was impressed by the presented content. The intensive exchange and focused discussions enabled participants to gain new insights into current research results and advanced developments. The active dialogue and constructive discussions helped to achieve significant insights and strengthen collaboration within Helmholtz Information.
