Helmholtz Doctoral Prize Winners in Helmholtz Information Honored
The Helmholtz Association, known for supporting outstanding scientific achievements, has once again awarded the prestigious Helmholtz Doctoral Prize this year. The awards in Helmholtz Information go to Dr. Tobias Röddiger and Dr. Zina Kallien, who have impressed with their innovative work in the fields of intelligent sensor technology and advanced manufacturing technologies.
The Helmholtz Doctoral Prize is awarded in two categories: Track A for fundamental research and Track B for application-oriented research. Each winner receives a one-time prize money of 5,000 Euros, which can be freely used for scientific projects, as well as the opportunity for a research stay of up to six months at an international institution.
Track A: Fundamental Research – Zina Kallien
In the category of fundamental research, Zina Kallien from the Helmholtz Centre Hereon was recognized for her outstanding research in the area of friction-based manufacturing technologies. Her dissertation, “Investigation of friction surfacing of an Al-Mg alloy in view of solid-state additive manufacturing,” focuses on friction stir welding, a process that not only conserves resources due to its simple setup and low energy consumption but also enhances the quality of the products. Zina Kallien has impressively demonstrated the significance of this technology for the development of sustainable production methods.
Track B: Application-Oriented Research – Tobias Röddiger
In the field of application-oriented research, Tobias Röddiger was honored for his innovative work at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. His doctoral thesis, “Earables: Wearable Computing on the Ears,” explores intelligent sensor devices worn on the ear that offer various health monitoring functions. By integrating sensors into everyday items such as headphones, new possibilities in medical technology and personal health monitoring are opened up. Tobias Röddiger has also developed the OpenEearable platform, an open-source project that brings together the scientific and technological community and expands the application areas of earables.
The Helmholtz Association emphasizes its commitment to promoting scientific excellence and supports the continuous development of the scientific careers of its awardees with these awards. The Helmholtz Doctoral Prize is thus not only a recognition of past research achievements but also a motivation for the recipients to further advance their scientific work.
