A Review of the 2023 Strategic Advisory Board Meeting in the Research Field Information
In May of this year, the annual meeting of the Strategic Advisory Board in the Research Field Information took place. The Strategic Advisory Board, a central body composed of independent international experts, plays a key role in scientific and strategic advice in the Research Field Information. The event was co-organized by the Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ), the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Helmholtz Centre hereon, and the Helmholtz Centre Berlin (HZB), with the FZJ and the Jülich Supercomputing Centre taking on the role of host for this year.
The event was attended by over 60 participants, including a balanced mix of young and experienced experts from academia, research policy, and administration. This led to a dynamic and productive exchange with the Strategic Advisory Board, covering both scientific and strategic questions. Among other things, the discussion addressed current challenges such as the energy crisis, the growing role of artificial intelligence in science, and the digitalization in the field of material science.
A central component of the meeting was also the detailed exploration of the host center. The participants had the opportunity to learn more about the research focus ‘Information’ at the FZJ during an extensive lab tour. At a total of four stations, the diversity of the current research activities carried out there was highlighted. The presentations and tours included topics such as exascale high-performance computing, quantum computing, and neuromorphic computing, and also provided special insights into the areas of brain research and material characterization.
A poster session at Burg Obbendorf was another highlight, which offered emerging scientists the opportunity to present their research projects and expose them to a wider audience. The concept of knowledge transfer was at the forefront, allowing researchers to demonstrate their innovative projects and practical applications.

In conclusion, the event can be considered a resounding success. The intense exchange and focused discussions on key topics allowed the participants to gain new insights into the current research findings and advanced developments. As a “critical friend”, the Strategic Advisory Board supports the Research Field Information with its extensive expertise and experience. The active dialogue and constructive discussions help to achieve significant insights and strengthen collaboration in the Research Field Information. Already now, there is eager anticipation for the next meeting with the Strategic Advisory Board, which will be held at the KIT next year.
