We in our respective Helmholtz Research Centers are filling this newly tailored Helmholtz Research Field Information with life. On the occasion of the fourth Program-oriented Funding Period (PoF IV period) we initiate this Blog called “Information Compass”, in order to highlight the starting point of a mutual story of success and everyone is essential and a part of that PoF IV-story. We are facing, working, and solving similar or interconnected challenges and targets on the Research Field level.

Contributions to this Blog by our researchers will give authentic insights into our latest challenges and successes. Germany’s responsible digital transformation in science, economy and society is the great challenge we focus on. We pave the way toward future information systems, we enable the information-based design of innovative materials for key applications in technology and life sciences, and we decode information processing in the brain and other living systems. We carefully address the related societal challenges with respect to security, ethical aspects and sustainability. By integrating natural, technical, cognitive, and social systems, we develop next-generation materials, a deeper understanding of information flow in biological systems, fundamental algorithms, and high-performance computing tools for the safe and secure collection, processing, analysis, storage, transfer, and usage of information across all scales and disciplines. The parallel development and implementation of cutting edge experimental, simulation and supercomputing tools facilitates application in materials science, where it spans from the analysis of materials to their virtual design and engineering, as well in brain research, which focuses on furthering our understanding of the (dys-)function of the human brain and the subsequent translation of these insights into clinical application and neuro-inspired technologies. Materials science and brain research are constitutive in two ways, they act as enablers as well as fields of application in the research program of the Research Field Information.

Everybody contributes a small part to an emerging bigger picture which I’m looking forward to see growing up in the next years. Bottom-up selected highlights will be presented here in our “Information Compass“. Especially our young talents are warmly invited to post their latest challenges and achievements within the Research Field Information.
