Researcher Position in Oceanography

At the Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling our research focus lies on numerical modeling of coastal processes and interactions between different environmental compartments on regional and coastal scales. We develop numerical models with the aim to determine the past and current state of the environment and to identify the major drivers for future changes in the system.

We are seeking a highly motivated and eager-to-learn individual to join our team in the field of marine science and climate change. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to ongoing projects focused on the implementation and interdisciplinary applications of wave and ocean models. As part of our team, you will be involved in the development of innovative research activities, including the use of machine learning and data fusion techniques, to enhance predictability of the earth system.

The position is initially for 3 years. In principle, the full-time position (39 h/week) is also shareable.

Your tasks:

  • work on ongoing projects related to wave and ocean models, applying interdisciplinary approaches
  • contribute to the development of research activities aimed at implementing innovative approaches like machine learning and data fusion
  • perform and analyse forecast simulations and climate change and assess uncertainties
  • improve the model predictability of the earth system components
  • perform impact studies (e.g. related to the extreme events) and assess the potential predictability of key variables relevant for different management sectors
  • communicate your achievements and findings

This position offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside a highly motivated and multidisciplinary team of researchers. In collaboration with leading scientific institutes and practitioners, you will contribute to the advancement of marine science and further our understanding of earths system and climate change. The research will be carried out in close cooperation with scientists and practitioners in different spheres in science and industry.

Your profile:

  • Master’s or PhD degree (academic university degree) in mathematics, informatics, data science, environmental sciences, oceanography, physics, engineering, or related disciplines
  • capacity and interest to work in different fields of marine science including physics, biogeochemistry, ecological processes, or environmental engineering
  • skills in scientific computing and programming languages (e.g. Fortran, Matlab, Python)
  • very good written and verbal English communication skills are required
  • good communication skills for communicating results to different audience including general public in relation to dissemination activities
