Doctoral / Postdoctoral Position

Join a great team to support marine research, ecosystem science and climate-friendly change!

At our Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling we are looking for a motivated, eager-to-learn person to support project work with a focus on coupled numerical modeling of the coastal ocean. Owing to constant improvement and development of our ocean and coastal models, the working group contributes to ocean, coastal and climate research, process understanding and forecasting in various European seas like the North Sea. Coupling of hydrodynamics with wind waves, sediment dynamics and ecosystem dynamics enables answering key scientific questions and tackle societal challenges related to climate change in prestigious projects with renowned international partners at the highest level of research.

We are looking for an applicant with good knowledge in physics, meteorology, oceanography, hydrology, programming or related sciences to support the team in project work and to develop their own research profile, as a PhD or as a PostDoc. The position is initially for 3 years.

Your tasks:

The applicant will be trained by our team in state-of-the-art modeling tools of ocean circulation, wind waves and biogeochemistry. The modeling work will proceed in close cooperation with experts from related fields of science and partners from the industry. The position offers an excellent opportunity for an application-oriented entry into Earth system modeling, whereby the work within the framework of the EU project OLAMUR contributes directly to the goals of the European Green Deal Initiative.

At Hereon, there is a long-standing experience in the development of coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical modeling specifically for the coastal ocean and estuarine domain. The new position builds on successful recent modeling scientific developments and thus offers the best prospects for a career in the Earth system and climate sciences as well as in the rapidly developing economic sectors of climate-friendly food and energy production.

Your profile:

  • For PhD candidates: Applicants must have completed a master’s (with minimum cum laude) or diploma degree in a field closely related to environmental sciences, oceanography, meteorology, physics, engineering or equivalent.
  • For post-doc candidates: in addition to the above a PhD degree.
  • A capacity and interest to work in different fields of marine science including physics, biogeochemistry, ecological processes, or environmental engineering.
  • Very good written and verbal English communication skills are required.
  • Good communication skills for communicating results to different audience including general public in relation to dissemination activities.
