Postdoc analysis of ocean model and observation data for offshore windfarms

Join a multidisciplinary team of researchers to contribute to the sustainable use of offshore renewable energies (ORE)!

The transformation of our economy towards renewable energy sources comes with a wide spectrum of interesting scientific challenges with regard to cost efficiency and environmental friendliness of the respective technology. The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon is at the forefront of research in this field with many activities in material research and earth system sciences focusing on coastal regions.

The Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling is looking for a motivated postdoc candidate to work on the analysis of ocean model and observation data for the support of operation and maintenance (O&M), as well as environmental impact assessments for offshore windfarms (OWF). The key question to be addressed in this work is: How to make optimal use of the wealth of existing earth system model and observation data for the support of the OWF sector by dedicated data processing and analysis, as well as the design of tailored information products and user friendly interfaces for information transfer?

Your tasks:

The work has two focus areas:

  1. the analysis and estimation of weather windows suitable for OWF construction and maintenance operations, taking into account OWF effects on the atmosphere (this will include consideration of new interesting ORE technologies, e.g. production of H2 at sea), and
  2. downscaling of ocean model data using artificial intelligence (AI) approaches. A scientifically very interesting aspect of this work is the large spectrum of time scales of interacting oceanic and atmospheric processes, that are relevant for the ORE sector (from operational up to climate change time scales).

The aim is to make the developed tools and statistical results accessible via user-friendly interfaces supported by the Helmholtz Coastal Data Center (HCDC). The Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling has long-term experience and profound expertise in coastal ocean modeling including physical and ecosystem processes to support the planned work. In addition, the institute has a powerful computer infrastructure including a cluster computer and a department dedicated to AI methods. The activities will be embedded in the institute’s ongoing work on the implementation of a digital twin (DT) describing the interaction between the ORE technology and the environment. The work will be strongly connected to existing projects with involvement of stakeholders (industry, agencies) and the candidate is expected to take part in the respective networking.

Your profile:

  • PhD in a discipline related to earth system sciences (e.g. oceanography, meteorology, physics, …)
  • experience with the analysis of large data sets from numerical models is highly desirable
  • knowledge about AI methods would be appreciated
  • experience with analysis software like R or preferably Python is required. Some knowledge about FORTRAN and parallelisation is desirable. Some knowledge in ArcGIS online would be great, but is not mandatory.
  • good communication skills for interactions with other scientists, stakeholders and the general public
  • proficiency in spoken and written English
