Doctoral / Postdoctoral Position Earth system modeling in the projects NAPSEA and OLAMUR

Join a great team at our Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling to work on exciting socio-ecological issues for tomorrow!

We are looking for a motivated and eager-to-learn person to drive the core work in the ambitious European-funded projects NAPSEA and OLAMUR. NAPSEA („N AND P – SOURCE TO SEA“) deals with the development of good ecological standards for estuaries and coastal waters. OLAMUR („Offshore Low-trophic Aquaculture in Multi-Use scenario Realisation“) goes a step further and aims to combine environmentally and climate-friendly extraction of food with renewable energy supply. In concrete terms, this will involve the development of conditions for low-trophic level aquaculture production in the area of offshore wind farms. The position is initially for 3 years. In principle, the position is also sharable.

Your tasks:

The applicant will be trained by our team in state-of-the-art modeling tools and will proceed in close cooperation with experts from science and partners from the industry. The position offers an excellent opportunity for an application-oriented entry into Earth system modeling, whereby the work within the framework of the EU projects OLAMUR and NAPSEA contributes directly to the goals of the European Green Deal Initiative.

At Hereon, there is a long-standing experience in the development of coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical modeling specifically for the coastal ocean and estuarine domain. The new position builds on successful recent modeling scientific developments and thus offers the best prospects for a career in the Earth system and climate sciences as well as in the rapidly developing economic sectors of climate-friendly food and energy production.

Your profile:

  • For PhD candidates: Applicants must have completed a master’s (with minimum cum laude) or diploma degree in a field closely related to environmental sciences, oceanography, meteorology, physics, engineering or equivalent.
  • For post-doc candidates: in addition to the above a PhD degree
  • A capacity and interest to work in different fields of marine science including physics, biogeochemistry, ecological processes, or environmental engineering.
  • Very good written and verbal English communication skills are required.
  • Good communication skills for communicating results to different audience including general public in relation to dissemination activities.
