Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in Oceanography, Mechatronics, Electronics or Measurement Technology
Within the framework of a Helmholtz funding line to strengthen transfer and innovation, the marine research centers of the Helmholtz Association AWI, GEOMAR and Hereon are establishing an innovation platform for marine observation, sensor technology and measurement data. This is done in close cooperation with industry in the field of sensor and system development on the one hand, and with operators of ships and measurement platforms on the other. The project will also work towards a broad participation of civil society in the collection of ocean data and pursues the long-term goal of establishing itself as a visible innovation platform for the new blue economy.
In the department of Coastal Productivity, we investigate the coastal and estuarine biogeochemical processes, including primary production, carbon and nutrient cycles, and ecosystem dynamics. We are specialized in using autonomous measurement technologies like FerryBox, in an effort to capture the in situ variability in ocean biogeochemistry. Within this project, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to develop a miniaturized autonomous measurement system for deployments on small vessels, as well as autonomous floating platforms. The position is initially limited to two years, starting as soon as possible.
Your tasks:
- conceptualization of a miniaturized measurement system using existing ocean sensors, from data collection to secure data transfer to FAIR data portals
- coordinate the development and implementation of a miniaturized measurement system into existing platforms (small boats and surface floats)
- development and implementation of standard operating procedures
- communication with external stakeholders, e.g. ocean industry partners
- close collaboration with project partners from AWI and GEOMAR on joint solutions, e.g. to specify the requirements of data acquisition and transmission
- support of workflows for sensor communication, data acquisition and data transfer
- preparation of workshop and training materials on the topic of research data management
- representation of the center at external events, publication of scientific or technological developments
Your profile:
- PhD in operational oceanography, mechatronics, electronics or similar field
- excellent programming skills, e.g. in Python (cross-platform Linux/Windows), LabVIEW, Matlab, C++
- high degree of initiative and ability to work in a team
- a high degree of independence, flexibility and creativity
- ability and willingness to participate in research at sea
