PhD position in extreme event attribution and storylines
The Climate Extremes and Impacts group of the Institute of Coastal Systems – Analyses and Modeling, invites applications for an exciting three-year PhD position. It will be in the field of climate change attribution as part of the BMBF project ClimXtreme – subject to the approval of funds – starting July 1st, 2023, and ending June 30th, 2026. Within the project ClimXtreme, a large network of research institutions in Germany is working on the common goal of analyzing how climate change is altering extreme weather events so users, decision makers and society can plan their response to changing impacts. In addition, uncertainties, the occurrence of extreme risks and the influence of human activities are addressed.
Your tasks:
The sub-project of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon will focus on highly topical attribution research and deals with the role of climate change for the development of severe summer heat waves and droughts in Central Europe. The strongest heat waves and droughts are hindcasted with global spectrally nudged storyline simulations in order to explicitly work out the influence of anthropogenic climate warming. Several stages of global climate change are considered, such as preindustrial, present and future climate warming, to study the effect each stage has on single extreme weather events. These simulations are then downscaled to higher resolution using a regional climate model. The overall goal is to assess the impact of known anthropogenic changes on extreme weather events.
Your profile:
- Master/Diploma (or be about to complete) in meteorology/atmospheric physics or in a related scientific field (e.g., geophysics or earth system science)
- strong interest in extreme events, climate change detection and attribution, climate modeling, and atmospheric dynamics
- experience in a higher programming language
- ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English
- good knowledge of data analysis/statistics
- strong motivation, also to publish in peer-reviewed journals and to present scientific results at international conferences
