Doctoral / PostDoctoral Position in Digital Twin

We invite enthusiastic applicants to fill a PhD or PostDoc position in the area of Digital Twin Ocean (DTO) at our Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling. A DTO system is built by combining state-of-the-art models and data fusion techniques, including Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based approaches, to reproduce a coherent, high-resolution, multi-dimensional, and multi-variable representation of the ocean. The DTO is a powerful tool to test different scenarios related to human uses and climate change impacts on the ocean environment, as well as possible solutions.

You will be part of a team focused on the development, implementation, and testing of DTO as part of the EU Horizon Europe Project EDITO-Model Lab (Underlying models for the European Digital Twin Ocean). The main goal is to help build a public platform allowing advanced users and stakeholders to perform on-demand scenario simulations and climate impact studies. The EDITO-Model Lab project aims to make ocean knowledge available to citizens, entrepreneurs, policymakers, decision-makers and scientific experts alike, thus enabling them to become partners in knowledge generation, explore desirable futures and develop ocean management scenarios (and assemble their own twins), with the overarching goal of ensuring a safe, healthy and productive ocean.

The position is initially for 3 years. In principle, the position is also sharable.

Your tasks:

  • scientific programming
  • data processing
  • support the development of tools for data and model output visualization
  • integrate AI/ML-based techniques into data and model analysis
  • What-if-Scenarios in DTO
  • write scientific publications

Your profile:

  • Master’s degree or diploma degree (academic university degree) in mathematics, informatics, data science, environmental sciences, oceanography, physics, engineering, or related disciplines
  • experience in ocean data manipulation and processing, either model, satellite or in-situ data products (e.g., NetCDF, CSV formats)
  • experience in AI-based methods (e.g., machine learning) is desirable
  • coding skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R, FORTRAN etc.)
  • good skills in written and spoken English
  • creativity and independence (excellent analytical and problem-solving skills), ability to work and communicate with an international team of scientists from different disciplines
