Postdoc Position (m/f/d) Climate Extremes and Machine Learning in EU Project CLINT
The Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling, invites applications for a four-year postdoc position starting July 1st, 2021, in the field of climate extremes, their large-scale drivers and machine learning within the Climate Extremes and Impacts group.
The position will be part of the new European project CLINT (CLImate INTelligence), which is an international consortium coordinated by the Polytechnic Institute of Milan. The overall goal of CLINT is to identify climate drivers and processes that are responsible for climate extremes in Europe and other nearby regions. This understanding should lead to better predictions and understanding of climate extremes with the goal of transferring this information to climate services.
Your tasks:
We are looking for an excellent and highly motivated candidate at the postdoc level for a time frame of 4 years, starting on July 1st, 2021. The candidate will be mainly responsible for applying causality analysis on the links between large-scale climate drivers and climate extremes. Modern machine-learning techniques will be applied to different types of data sets, ranging from observations, meteorological and oceanic reanalysis and global and regional climate simulations. Some of these climate simulations will be specifically conducted for this project. The work requires experience in statistical climatology, machine learning and climate simulation skills.
Your profile:
- PhD (or be about to complete) in meteorology/atmospheric physics or in a related scientific field (e.g., geophysics or earth system science)
- strong interest in extreme events, climate modeling, and atmospheric dynamics
- experience with climate models
- good knowledge of data analysis and statistics
- experience in machine learning techniques is beneficial
- experience in a higher programming language
- ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English
- strong motivation, also to publish in peer-reviewed journals and to present scientific results at international conferences
