Welchen fachlichen Hintergrund haben Sie? / What is your qualifying background?
Ich bin Ozeanographin und Klimaforscherin. Ich beschäftige mich mit der Rolle des Ozeans im Klimasystem. Dabei untersuche ich besonders, wie sich verschiedene Klimabedingungen auf die Gegebenheiten im Nordatlantik auswirken und – andersherum – wie sich Veränderungen im Nordatlantik auf das Klima auswirken können.
Die Klimazustände, die ich untersuche, sind ganz verschieden; sie reichen von einem kalten Eiszeitklima, wie es vor ca 21.000 Jahren vorherrschte, über das Klima der letzten 2.000 Jahre bis in die Gegenwart. Ich habe dabei viel mit numerischen Klimamodellen gearbeitet. Beispielsweise habe ich anhand von Modellsimulationen von einem eiszeitähnlichen Klima gezeigt, wie ein Zusammenspiel aus kleinen Änderungen in den nordatlantischen Strömungen, Wind und Meereis zu großen und abrupten Klimaänderungen führen kann.
In meinem aktuellen Projekt arbeite ich an langfristigen Klimarekonstruktionen. Ich versuche, die Rekonstruktion der Klimavariabiltät im Nordatlantik auf der Basis von sogenannten Proxy-Daten – also z.B. Baumringe – zu verbessern. Hierfür bin ich in die Welt des maschinellen Lernens eingetaucht und untersuche, wie diese Methoden helfen können, die derzeitigen Rekonstruktionen zu verbessern.
I am an oceanographer and climate scientist. I focus on the role of the ocean in the climate system. In particular, I study how different climate states affect the North Atlantic and – vice versa – how changes in the North Atlantic can influence the climate system. I study very different climate states; they range from a very cold glacial climate, which prevailed around 21,000 years ago, to the climate of the last 2,000 years and the modern climate. In the past, I have mostly worked with numerical climate models. Most recently, I showed that the interaction between small changes in North Atlantic currents, surface winds and sea ice can cause large and abrupt climate transitions in a simulation with glacial climate conditions.
In my current project, I work with longterm climate reconstructions which are based on so-called proxy data such as tree rings and statistical methods. My work aims at improving the existing reconstructions with the help of machine learning methods.
Wie sieht ein typischer Arbeitstag aus? / How would you describe your working daily routine?
Da ich hauptsächlich mit numerischen Modellen, Klimasimulationen und Daten, die andere Kolleg*innen gesammelt haben, arbeite, sieht mein typischer Arbeitstag erstmal einfach wie ein typischer Büro-Alltag vor dem Computer aus. Ich schreibe beispielsweise meinen eigenen Computer-Code, um Daten auszuwerten und die Ergebnisse darzustellen. Beim Computer-Code Schreiben braucht man viel Geduld und Zeit, um den Code zu prüfen und Fehler zu finden. Und es braucht auch viel Kreativität und Vorstellungsvermögen. Wenn ich mir Modellsimulationen des Ozeans anschaue, stelle ich mir dabei vor, dass ich in einer kleinen virtuellen Versions des richtigen Ozeans unterwegs bin.
Eigentlich gehört natürlich auch viel Austausch mit Kolleg*innen zu einem typischen Arbeitstag dazu. Leider ist der zur Zeit ja auf digitale Kommunikation beschränkt. Ich verbringe also auch viel Zeit mit Videokonferenzen und Online-Seminaren. Wo ich am Computer sitze, kommt in Zeiten von Home Office sehr darauf an, ob meine kleine Tochter in die Kita gehen kann oder nicht. Wenn sie zu Hause ist, versuche ich einen alternativen Arbeitsplatz zu finden. Sie findet Computer und Tastatur enorm spannend, das verträgt sich aber leider nicht so gut mit produktivem Arbeiten. Bei einigen Gruppentreffen war sie allerdings auch schon dabei.
Most of my work revolves around climate models, simulation and data that other colleagues have collected. Thus, my daily working routine looks like a typical office routine in front of the computer. I spend a lot of time writing my own computer code to analyse climate data and to visualise the results. For this, you need a lot of patience to test your code and find all the potential mistakes you made while coding. And you also need a lot of creativity and imagination. For instance, I always imagine that the ocean simulations are small virtual oceans that I can enter and roam around in to find the best way of describing what is happening in them.
Of course, a lot of the working routine is also about exchange with colleagues. At the moment, this is unfortunately mostly limited to virtual meetings. Thus I spend a lot of time in videoconferences and online seminars. The exact location of my desk is quite variable these days and depends a lot on whether or not my little daughter can attend day care. When she is at home, I try to find an alternative workplace. She is super interested in screens and keyboards but unfortunately that does not agree very well with productive work. But she has already joined some of our group meetings.
Was war Ihr bisher größter Erfolg? / What has been your biggest success so far?
Schwer zu sagen. Im Moment empfinde ich jede Woche, in der meine Familie und ich die Herausforderung von Home Office und Kinderbetreuung gut überstehen, als einen enorm großen Erfolg. Dazu kommen dann kleinere fachliche Erfolge, die mich sehr freuen. Z.B., dass meine Simulationen von abruptem Klimawandel jetzt Teil eines größeren Projektes sind, in dem Modelle verglichen werden sollen, die ähnliche Phänomene simuliert haben. Für diese Art von Simulation hat es einen solchen Vergleich noch nicht gegeben und da werden bestimmt viele spannende Erkenntnisse herauskommen.
That is difficult to say. At the moment, every week in which my family and I successfully manage to combine working from home and child care feels like a huge success already! And then there are many smaller successes. Recently, my simulations of abrupt climate change became part of a project which will compare similar simulations across different models. This is the first time that such a comparison can be made for this kind of abrupt climate change, and I am very excited about the new insights that will come from this!
Was ist Ihr großes Ziel? / Do you have a big goal?
Mit meiner Arbeit zu einem besseren Verständnis des Klimasystems und den möglichen Folgen des Klimawandels beizutragen und dieses Wissen dann auch aus der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft herauszutragen und für jede*n zugänglich und nachvollziehbar machen. In diese Richtung gibt es ja schon großartige Arbeiten von vielen Kolleg*innen und ich hoffe, dass meine eigene Arbeit da auch beitragen kann.
A very big goal is to contribute to a better understanding of the climate system and generate knowledge that can somehow help to tackle the challenges that we face regarding future climate change. And to help to make this knowledge accessible and understandable for everyone outside of the scientific community. There is already a lot of great work being done by colleagues, and I hope that my own work can also contribute!
