PhD Position (m/f/d) carbon sequestration in the pelagic food web
The working group for Matter Transport and Ecosystem Dynamics at the Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling invites applications for a PhD position in the frame of the project APOC focusing on the organic carbon cycle in the North Sea ecosystem. APOC is a collaborative project with an interdisciplinary team of researchers from several German Marine Research Institutes, which combines observations and modeling activities to understand changes in the marine carbon cycle under increasing anthropogenic pressures.
The aim of the PhD project is to investigate changes in the processes related to carbon sequestration in the pelagic food web. Focus will be given to the question how POC fluxes inside the food web and at the oceanic interfaces might vary under various management scenarios in the light of climate change. The position is limited to 36 months.
Your tasks:
- performance of scenario and hindcast model simulation with respect to specific management scenarios
- analysis and assessment of model results with respect to carbon fluxes and carbon sequestration in the food web
- performance and analysis of relevant climate projection scenarios
- work as an integrative part of a motivated multidisciplinary team within the institute and external academic partners
- write scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals
- presentation of results at meetings and international conferences
Your profile:
- Master in oceanography, geosciences, marine biology, environmental sciences or related disciplines
- thorough knowledge on marine ecosystem functioning
- interest in marine ecosystem modeling
- experience in scientific programming with FORTRAN and related analysing programming languages (e.g. MATLAB, R, Python) would be an advantage
- knowledge of English (written and oral)
- good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of various fields of geosciences
