What is your qualifying background?

I have a Bachelor, Masters, and Doctorate all in Civil Engineering, with an emphasis on fluid mechanics and water resources, and a minor in mathematics.

How would you describe your working daily routine?

I am most often in the office, or in meetings, but spend around one month every year at sea for measurement campaigns.

What has been your biggest success so far?

Ever since my graduate student days, I have been developing a theory to understand the physics of ocean mixing in certain conditions.  We have recently observed these conditions occurring in the German Bight of the North Sea during a strong storm exactly as the theory predicts.  It looks to be an important physical process for the biology.

Do you have a big goal?

I feel like I have many big goals, but ultimately I want the small-scale processes that I study to help improve climate models and our ability to manage coastal regions.

Do you have any personal distinctive mark?

I am not sure what is meant by the question, but I am a Canadian who speaks German with a strong Swiss accent.  Many Germans I have met find this fascinating.
