What is your qualifying background?
I started to study physical oceanography when I was a graduate student. I did some interesting research about a strong upwelling in the South China Sea and its response to the large-scale climate variability. Then I did my PhD at Hamburg University. I used model simulations to study the impact of surface volume flux on the global ocean circulation. After that, I came to the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht and started to work on coastal climate service with a focus on storm surge activity and sea level variability at the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts (see website storm surge monitor).
How would you describe your working daily routine?
Interesting! Although I sit still at my desk all day, my mind could actually go to different places (e.g. from the North Sea coast to the Pacific Ocean) and do many things (e.g. programming, analyzing data, and writing research articles). Of course, reading is also an important part of my routine, which allows me to understand many inspiring studies about various topics (e.g. sea level, ocean circulation, climate change).
What has been your biggest success so far?
That would be getting my PhD without depression. 😀
Do you have a big goal?
Along the path, I have got so many encouragement and inspiration from many scientists. They taught me knowledge as well as the caring attitude towards the younger generation. It would be great if I could be one of them and share what I know or what the scientific community knows with more people.
Do you have any personal distinctive mark?
I am really ‘into’ the ocean. 😉
