PhD Position (m/f/d) in the area of Coastal Ocean Turbulence

The Institute of Coastal Research is investigating the influence of offshore wind farm structures on the dynamics of coastal seas. The interaction of tidal and coastal currents with the offshore wind farm foundation structures creates anthropogenic sources of turbulence that contribute to additional mixing and transport of buoyancy that can affect stratification levels. Primarily through the use of Large Eddy Simulations (LES), the candidate will investigate this mixing process with the aim of producing a parameterisation suitable for use in larger scale regional models. The work will contribute to our understanding of the response to offshore wind farm development in the German region of the North Sea. The project may also involve the collection of field data.

We invite applications for a PhD position (m/f/d) in the area of Coastal Ocean Turbulence; preferably starting as soon as possible. The position is limited to three years with the degree being awarded through the University of Hamburg.

Your tasks:

  • to simulate ocean turbulence using computer clusters
  • developing scientific computing codes to process and interpret simulation-based and observational data sets
  • developing theoretical and conceptual models to understand and parameterise coastal ocean mixing
  • conduct a case study of the effects of offshore wind farms on North Sea turbulence dynamics
  • working as an integral part of a motivated multidisciplinary team within the institute and with external academic partners
  • scientific publication and presentation

Your profile (essential qualifications):

  • a Master’s in oceanography, geosciences, mathematics or related disciplines
  • strong academic publication record
  • extensive experience in numerical modelling and model development
  • profound programming skills in at least one scientific programming language (e.g. FORTRAN, C, Python, Matlab)
  • good knowledge of English (written and oral)
  • high degree of creativity and flexibility; ability to work under pressure
  • good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with scientists, engineers, and technicians
