Ocean Scientist Position (m/f/d)

The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) hosts a number of highly motivated and experienced researchers in the field of ocean modelling, remote sensing, climate variability, and data assimilation. In the frame of different EU and BMBF-funded projects multidisciplinary coastal research activities are carried out. For example, in the new project OceanCurrents numerical models will be combined with innovative measurement concepts based on novel underwater drifting devices. It will be demonstrated how the newly available observational data, together with state of the art modelling can be used to support further the regional and coastal oceanography.

In cooperation with internationally recognized institutions in Europe new methodologies will be developed and further introduced into coupled model suites (wind-wave-surge-current interplay) that will produce new standards for coastal models and data analyses. The work will be carried out in close cooperation with partners from Israel (University of Haifa and University of Tel Aviv) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

For these activities Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is looking for a highly motivated Scientist (m/f/d) with knowledge and experience in modelling and data analyses. The position is initially limited to 3 years.

Your tasks:
The successful candidate is expected to conduct research focused on both data analyses and numerical simulations. A strong emphasis will be laid on extremes, and improving predictability in the coastal areas. Ability and willingness to work in international and interdisciplinary teams is desirable.

Your profile:
Candidate holding a University degree in physics, mathematics, physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, environmental sciences, or related disciplines are invited. Experience in ocean, wave or atmosphere modelling, as well as willingness to travel and spend some time in Israel are desirable. Skills in scientific programming are expected, as well as good knowledge of the English language (written and spoken).
