Postdoctoral Investigator (m/f/d)

One scientific focus of the Institute of Coastal Research is the coastal observing system COSYNA (Coastal Observing System for Northern and Arctic Seas) for the systematic observation and modelling of the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and Arctic coastal waters. A major component is the automated underway FerryBox system mounted on ships of opportunity. The German Bight is a dynamic shelf sea region, influenced by outflow from the Elbe River, exchange with tidal mud flats and marshes within the Wadden Sea, and coastal processes acting on different time scales.

We are looking for a qualified and motivated scientist to investigate biogeochemical processes with focus on the carbon dynamic and budget in coastal areas and the coupling to physical processes. The successful applicant will analyse and assess data from FerryBoxes and research cruises and will use statistical methods as well as biogeochemical and ecosystem models in collaboration with other scientists.

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral position (m/f/d) in the area of Marine Biogeochemistry with preferred starting date on August 1, 2019. The position is limited to two years. The place of employment is Geesthacht, Germany.

The tasks of the successful candidate will include:

  • analysis of existing data sets from the COSYNA observing system and comparison with other in-situ and model data
  • performance and analysis of biogeochemical model runs with possible model development
  • investigation of biogeochemical processes focusing on the carbon system, phytoplankton productivity, and the role of nutrients
  • planning, participation, and evaluation of research cruises
  • working as an integral part of a motivated multidisciplinary team within the institute and external academic partners
  • producing scientific publications and presentations

Essential qualifications:

  • a PhD in oceanography, geosciences, mathematics or related disciplines within the last five years
  • strong academic publication record
  • experience in observational oceanography or instrumentation
  • experience in programming (e.g. FORTRAN, C, Matlab, Python) and data processing and analysis
  • ability and willingness to participate in research cruises
  • excellent knowledge of English (written and oral)
  • high degree of creativity and flexibility; ability to work under pressure.
  • good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with scientists, engineers, and technicians
